Capri Steak House - Columbus

In June we made our second visit to a spot in Columbus, WI. The Capri Steak House is a very friendly establishment about 30 miles northeast of Madison. Had a smaller group of 4 for this trip.

Capri is now run by second generation family. The Campbells bought the business in 1992. And they kept it looking the same since the former owner added the dining room to the bar back in 1954. The wood paneling is punctuated by upholstered red walls.

Walked into the tiny building and there was a bar with mirrors on all sides. There was one long bar, plus tables against the other wall. And the bar led into the dining room in the back. We sat at the bar and ordered drinks. And then we enjoyed their homemade "potato skins" with cheese spread. SO DELICIOUS!

I could've sat there and ate the potato skins all night. Thankfully, I saved room for the actual meal. We took our drinks to our table and perused their menu. Classic supper club fare at reasonable prices.

They serve prime rib every night. On Saturday they also had lobster. Every night they offer their homemade French Onion Soup, which is popular with the regulars. Entrees are served with a relish tray, bread basket, potato, and choice of salad or soup. David and I had Prime Rib with a baked potato and salad. Serena had Prime Rib with French Onion soup, baked potato, and lobster tail. Skyler ordered Steak with French Fries and Chicken Noodle Soup. Everything we ate was delicious, no complaints from anyone.

Now let's go through the checklist to score Capri Steak House.

1. Prime Rib specials are served every Saturday night.
It's actually served every night, so yes.

2. A relish tray is served.
Yes

3. Manhattans and Old-Fashioned cocktails are served with Brandy.
Yes. David had an Old-Fashioned sour with cherries. Serena had an Old-Fashioned sweet with olives.

4. Jell-O is served as a salad option.
Nope. Oh well!

5. Walleye is a regular menu item.
Yes, broiled or beer battered.

6. All-you-can-eat fried fish on Friday nights.
Yes, they advertise it right on the front of their menu.

7. Grasshopper and Pink Cadillac cocktails are large enough to share.
Again, we didn't order dessert since we were so full from our entrees.

8. Christmas lights are strung along structures year-round.
Yes

9. The Waitresses call you "Hon"
She did not. But, the owner came around several times to chit chat.

10. The club has a scenic view of our beautiful state.
Capri is located in the middle of downtown Columbus. It's small with one window in the front. So there wasn't much of a view.

So Capri Steak House gets a score of 7 out of 10. Our group enjoyed every minute of our visit. We will definitely be returning in the future.

Update: November 10, 2018
We returned here for another visit. David was wanting to go back ever since our first visit. This time we had our largest group ever, with 12 people. Several people ordered the Prime Rib,while two people ordered shrimp, and two people had entree salads. We again had relish trays, homemade cheese spreads, and old-fashioneds.

On November 12, 2018 they announced on their Facebook page that they had closed for good. I don't know why, but we're glad we got to experience them before their doors were closed.

  1. It was a great meal. I took the prime rib home for sandwiches all week. We will be going back there again. Maybe we gan get some of the rest of our group to join us.
